If you’ve gone through the process of becoming a foster care provider, you already know: the trainings never really stop. Between initial licensing requirements and the certifications you have to keep current — CPR, First Aid, AED, and more — it can feel like a part-time job on top of everything else.

We learned that firsthand. Inspired by close friends who had fostered three children and adopted two of them, we began exploring fostering ourselves — with the goal of adopting through a Los Angeles–based FFA.

As is often the case, our first placement was reunified with family. We were lucky to build a strong bond with that family, though, and we’re still part of that child’s life today. Our second placement became permanent, and we recently finalized the adoption.

Along the way — and while keeping our own certifications current — I noticed something as a UX/UI designer and product development lead: the more affordable online CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications were often thin on depth and clarity. That’s what inspired this course: training built specifically around the challenges foster parents face, covering skills that can genuinely be life-saving. Hands-on CPR training is still recommended for first-time learners, but we think this does a better job preparing foster parents than the alternatives out there.
